There is a country on this planet that is as real as any other.

Yet its citizens have no vote on the issues that affect their country as a whole. They have no common currency. No ambassadors or other officials to work with the leaders of other nations.

At this time, this country’s citizens are un-enfranchised. They have no vote, no real political power, no real say in the future direction of their country, which is the future direction of our world. This lack of collective political power lies at the very heart of why the other nations of the world have failed to solve the global crises of our time.

You are a citizen of this country.

So is everyone else on the planet.

It is time for us to start acting like it.

It is time to claim our citizenship.

It is time to create The Country of Earth as a nation standing co-equal to all the other nations on this planet. For they… are us.

We can do this.

If we are willing to do it… together.

Declare Your Citizenship

There already is a lot to do as a citizen of Earth. Political movements around the world are calling for greater equality, greater respect for immigrants, greater efforts for environmental sustainability, and more.  What follows is not meant to take away from any direct citizen efforts now underway. The Country of Earth Project is meant to be an addition to–not a replacement of–our current work, efforts and responsibilities as citizens on all levels.

In the coming months and years there will be lots more to do, specifically as the citizens of The Country of Earth. The movement for the creation of The Country of Earth as a political entity has just begun, but we hope in the next two years (by 2020) to have initial technologies enabling citizen-driven discussion, debate and voting on the issues we care about.

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW: The Most Important First Step

The most important action you can take right now as a citizen of Earth is to formally declare your citizenship, and give your political support to our planet, which is The Country of Earth.

You can do all of the above by starting the process of formally declaring your citizenship in The Country of Earth, right here:

Founding Principles

We All Are Equally the Citizens of Earth

It is simple truth that we are all citizens of Earth. We therefore all have the right to participate in the creation of it as a political entity.

As such, though I have a voice in this just like you, it is also not my sole place — nor that of any “core team” or “project staff” that will emerge for this project over time — to determine the ultimate configuration of how we will work together as a people. We must learn how to do this, together.

That said, we have to start somewhere. Here are some of The Country of Earth Project’s initial thoughts on the matter:

Direct Democracy

In The Country of Earth, let us take advantage of our newly developed social media technologies for fostering connection. With knowledge we already have about such processes, we can develop additional technologies that will enable us to vote for ourselves, directly, on the issues we care about.[read more=”Read More (+)” less=”Read Less (-)”]

Let us at least begin with no Country of Earth politicians standing for office. Politicians of other countries are of course are most welcome to participate here, for they too are citizens of Earth just like the rest of us. CEOs and corporate board members, too. Everyone.

How will we do this? There are quite a few prospective models for direct democracy already proposed out there, and as this movement grows there will likely be many more. There is also one long-standing, working semi-direct democracy we can look to, for ideas on how we might propose laws (or even a constitution), as well as debate and vote together as one people: Switzerland.

In the United States, we already have at least one online tool — Countable.Us — for voting on the issues we care about, which then informs the U.S. citizen’s congressional Representative and two U.S. Senators of her vote.

These early models gives us a small taste of what is possible.

There are many issues to contend with, the very most important of which is how do we all come to agree… on anything? But there are others. We are going to have to learn how to do this, together.

Open Collaboration

The principles of Open Collaboration have been used in the creation of many of the tools we now use every day online. These principles can guide us as we learn how to work together. One resource is the Open Collaboration Encyclopedia.

Strategic, Integrated and Synergistic Solutions

Rather than seeking to supplant the work of existing governments, we prefer instead to seek integrated, synergistic solutions to our collective problems.

Open, Integrated Online Platforms

This — The Country Of Earth Project — is likely not to be the only team of people out in the world committed to the creation of The Country of Earth, or who are focused upon vastly similar ideas. Other teams may have other ideas of how to call forth this future.

The Country of Earth Project is committed to bringing together all organizations committed to the creation of direct-democratic voting systems and the creation of a global sovereign and co-equal nation in the creation of establishing a single integrated voting platform.[read more=”Read More (+)” less=”Read Less (-)”]

Following Open Collaborative principles and models, The Country of Earth Project is committed to providing all organizations and teams committed to this collective global project an ability to connect to a common online database for The Country of Earth, with an Application Programming Interface (API) and offering a Software Development Kit (SDK) — tools which can be used to link systems together, much like you may do when you use a Google, Facebook or other sign-in on another website.

These tools and services will enable anyone can connect to this core platform, and thus create a common place where all votes cast by the Citizens of Earth can be recorded, and where all people also have the capacity to decide the manner under which they vote.

This integrative voting tool could become of enormous benefit to other countries, governments and groupings of people of all sizes, from a local country, to your school district, to the people living on your block, or who might be your colleagues in the same company.

The backend will of course need to be secure and safe from hacking. Voting should be easy, secure, and private, and ultimately verifiable as one-person, one-vote.

There are obviously a vast number of technological hurdles to surmount, as well as the development of protocols designed to ensure that the software development of the entire project remains both open to input from all, while also being secure from attack from those who might cause the project, or the People of Earth as a whole, harm.

This may not be easy, but we must find a way. For those of us committed to coming together as one world, we must set aside our selfish/megoic tendencies to have “the answer” and instead seek ways to connect our separate efforts together, so that in the end we all can come together having founded one, common country. These differences are all for the good, these different efforts can all be for the good as well. For it is from these different ideas that we will eventually forge what will work for us all, as the People of Earth.[/read]

Respect for Sovereignty

It is important that we begin by acknowledging the existing sovereignty of the other nations of the world as well as the value of existing international law.

Peaceful Non-Violent Change

There are many aspects of our global civilization that now need to change. We all recognize this. One of the most critical of all is to begin to put an end to the violence which exists between us. We do not seek to add to the violence of our world, but to dramatically reduce it through efforts to meet the needs of all of us, rather than just some of us.

The World Needs You

It is the Will of the People that have always changed things, in history. Leaders may have led, but it was the people’s will that made the difference. Recent movements have seen our collective power for change only grow. These include:

  • the American and French Revolutions, opening the world to modern-day representative democracy
  • the abolition of slavery
  • universal suffrage (the right to vote) for all
  • the Indian Independence and the example of Mahatma Gandhi
  • the civil rights movement and the example of Martin Luther King Jr.
  • the Arab Spring
  • today’s movements for full gender equality (equal rights and pay for women, marriage equality, etc.)

Nearly every right even some of us enjoy today exists because people said it should: the 40-hour work week, no child labor, the minimum wage, the right to privacy, to free speech, and so on (it should be noted that many of these rights do not exist in most local countries, of course, and if they do are not always enforced).

It is the people’s will that moves the world forward. It is what always has.

Today our world has a raft of global crises, from climate change to terrorism, deepening income inequality worldwide, two-thirds of a billion people lack access to clean water (2.4 billion without access to a toilet), and millions now displaced from their homelands. This is just a small fraction of our global problems, today. Climate change threatens us even more in the years ahead, unless something can be done to stop and reverse the ominous trends brought upon by a twentieth century consumptive economy, where profit is the driving factor over all other considerations, including the well being of the planet. Meanwhile, politicians worldwide listen to the leaders of our mega-corporations to help determine what is best, all while the problems of our corporate-driven economy continue to worsen. Many of these problems have reached crisis levels for our global civilization.

It is clear that these global crises cannot be solved on the national level. Our individual, local nations, no matter how well meaning some of them may be, are still too selfishly focused on the needs of their own peoples to address all of these global problems in a comprehensive way. But the problems we have cannot be solved with the level of thinking at which we have created them. We created them separately. We cannot solve them that way.

Indeed, these problems cannot be solved by the existing global political and economic structures of our world, now, or by doing more of the same.

The planet needs us.

It needs you.

It needs us to come together. Because only together can we truly act to solve these problems.

What will happen when we stand together not just as individuals, or residents of disparate, separated countries, but together as citizens of our common planet… and have that reality recognized, everywhere, politically?

We can and will create a new world together, a world of sustainability, equality and peace, a world where everyone has the opportunity to live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives. We can do it.

We will do it, together.

The place to begin… is here.

About Us

The Country of Earth Project catalyzes the conditions necessary for the creation, successful birth and natural evolution of The Country of Earth as a political entity standing co-equal to all the other nations of this planet.

We are committed to the sustainable establishment of a direct democracy run by, of and for the People of Earth, in the service and care for all life on this planet.

We will do this through citizen enrollment and registration, direct democracy political technology development, the fostering of citizen-based, citizen-driven global connections, projects and other means.

INITIAL STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES

CITIZEN ENROLLMENT

Enroll a minimum of 1.5 billion people as declared citizens of The Country of Earth, thus fully justifying The Country of Earth’s political right to exist by becoming the largest political entity on the planet in terms of declared citizenship. This will permit us to call for a global vote for the political recognition of The Country of Earth.

  • A mid-level goal of 350 million is set, so that we can declare ourselves the third largest political entity after China and India.
  • An initial goal of 5 million declared citizens is set, to establish us with a declared citizenship population greater than half the local countries on the planet.

POLITICAL TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT

Establish a citizen-based website and technology platform built for a fully enfranchised direct democracy of, by and for the People of Earth.

  • An initial goal is to create a “Countable.Us”-like website and smartphone app, enabling all citizens of Earth to propose ideas, debate them, and vote on them.
  • We will establish citizen groups to act as beta-testers of different direct democracy political technologies, allowing for the best systems to be created, studied and then expanded for greater use.
  • We will establish a regular roll-out schedule of our technology coupled with a deepening relationship with our citizen base to ultimately produce a verifiable one-person one-vote issues discussion, debate and voting system.
  • We will partner with organizations committed to similar goals, to create a network and a common voter database, enabling our different efforts to come together in one place so that the collective voice of the People of Earth can be heard.

CITIZEN PARTICIPATION

Engage enrolled citizens in projects designed to foster greater participation, find common ground, forge global relationships, and the creation and nurturance of civic actions and projects to solve the global crises of our era.
